Now its time for our first visit to the dentist. I had thought of waiting a little longer but since yesterday a tooth has begun to hurt. So I made an appointment for myself and my kids. That was the easy part. The hardest part would be attempting to convince Johannes to come. “Definitely not“ he said as he ran into his room.
That evening I was brushing the kid’s teeth when I told them to “brush properly so the dentist will be pleased to see your beautiful teeth!“ Johannes spit the toothpaste out of his mouth and said “Mami, I am going to keep my mouth closed so he can’t look into it”. He smiled satisfied and carried on brushing. I said back “But you have to open it! What are you going to do when he finally manages to open your mouth anyway?“ He thought about it for a second, and shot back “Then I will bite his finger“. He laughed and clapped his hands.
Immediately after that, my husband came into the bathroom to find out who got bit and by whom, and our son explained the situation “Mami thinks I am going to the dentist but I don’t want to and i’ll bite him if he tries anything!“ “But son, do you think Iron Man would bite anyone that tried to help him?“, my husband asked him. Johannes looked confused and said “but Papi, Iron Man isn’t going to the dentist!“ I waited for my husbands explanation for this one!
“Sure he is! He had to go to the mechanic too when one screw or metal bar of his super cool new suit gets broken or when he needs an oil change! He even had to brush his teeth so he is not allowed to eat lots of chocolate because he’ll get toothache too!“
Johannes paused thoughtfully, before asking “So the dentist knows Iron Man?” Within a second, my husband replied “Sure he does! And now you get to know him too!”
There it was, a gleam in the eye of a child that you usually only see at Christmas. “Antonia did you hear that? Papi is going with us to see Iron Man!“, he was laughing and screaming with joy. My poor husband looked very confused and unhappy about what he had just done. “You will do just fine!”, I told him and hugged him.
